This time last year, Arsenal were sitting a healthy fourth, yet they were still seven points of the top of the table. This season, Arsenal lay 15th, twelve points behind leaders United. This is starting to get pathetic.
Arsenal are usually pumped up and ready to play Spuds to prove that they are the best of North London, but today, Arsenal seemed rather lackadaisical. The Gunners’ were poor, playing at a very low level for most of the game.
The match started out rather slow, Tottenham had a couple of half chances but not much. Arsenal than had a very, very good chance to open the scoring through Gervinho, which somehow went off target.
Rafael Van Der Vaart scored his annual goal against Arsenal in a controversial way. Emmanuel Adebayor put in a good ball for Van Der Vaart, whom clearly handled the ball to put it in front of himself before finishing with aplomb. He then ran into the crowd to celebrate, yet no yellow card.
Arsenal started the second half in a better way than the first. Alex Song did well to drive into the box before unleashing a brilliantly cross for Aaron Ramsey to tuck in. Arsenal than seemed the more likely to grab a winner before a speculative shot from far away somehow found the bottom corner. Szczesny may have done better on it but it was really poor defending all around from the gunners.
Arsenal than “tried” to find an equalizing goal, but in all honesty Spurs were looking the more likely to score. Bale and Defoe both had good chances to put the game to bed, but the score remained 2-1.
Arsene Wenger than gave his thoughts on the game,
“In the first half I felt we played a little but with the handbrake on. Even playing like that we had four chances. At half time we came out and had a go at them and got it back to 1-1. I felt again that we didn’t push on enough and let them get back into the game.”
“We lack a little bit of confidence at the moment, and we just need to protect a result when we have one.”
On Title hopes,
I do not think like that, I think at the moment we have to set ourselves a realistic target and to get in touch with the teams who are fighting for the Champions League positions. If you say today we will win the league it is not realistic.
At the moment we are 12 points behind Manchester United and Manchester City – that’s not realistic to say today that we will win the league. We have to fight to come back into a much better position, that’s reality.
Arsenal played poor today, simple as that. Tottenham were more aggressive and were much more threatening than us. It is sad that this Arsenal squad has gone from a European Powerhouse to a bottom of the table team in a few months. We have not recovered from our Cup Final defeat to Birmingham in February, and our four goal slip against Newcastle earlier in the year. We need something to change and quickly, or we can say goodbye to European Football for next season.
Arsenal til’ I die
I’m Arsenal til I die
I Know I am, I’m sure I am
I’m Arsenal til’ I die
